Regardless of the type of clocks we own, the most important thing about them is that they work. A Howard Miller grandfather clock is simply a decoration if its cable-driven movement doesn't work. So, what do we do if our treasured grandfather clock stops working?

The main priority, however, when seeking to repair the timepiece is to correctly diagnose its problem. For example, the clock may have stopped simply because it was moved slightly. To determine which replacement clock parts are needed, one must read the wording on the actual movement inside the clock. This will be different to any wording or markings on the case or any paperwork that came with the clock. Once the type of clock part required has been determined, it is then a matter of purchasing the part and replacing it. Of course, replacing the part is best done by a qualified repairer.
What if the clock is an antique?
There are usually compatible parts available to suit antique clocks. The antique clock parts inside the clock can be cleaned and lubricated, however, it is often more cost effective and, indeed, efficient to replace the original part with a new movement. It has been said that if one must be sentimental about their clock, it is better to be sentimental about the case, not the movement.
What about cuckoo clocks?
Cuckoo clock parts are finer than grandfather clock parts and can be quite delicate. In addition to the movement controlling the dial, they also have separate movements for the cuckoo bird and any other moving figures on the clock.
It is important to remember, if storing the clock away for any length of time that the hands are usually quite fine and may break if anything is placed on top. Care must also be taken with the two bellows that create the cuckoo's call as they can be subject to tearing.
It is always wise to have a cuckoo clock serviced professionally. In the long run this course of action will be the most cost-effective.
Are electric clocks expensive to repair?
Generally, electric clock parts are inexpensive and, less complicated than older, pendulum style clocks and the repair costs reflect this.
Quartz Clocks?
Quartz clock movements rely on the quartz crystal's ability to vibrate against an electrical field. Quartz clock parts are also generally inexpensive and can quite successfully be replaced without taking the clock to a clock repairer. If in doubt, however, it is always best to consult a professional.
Howard Miller Repairs?
Howard Miller clock parts differ with the type of clock. It is not recommended that owners repair Howard miller clocks themselves but take to an authorised Howard Miller clock repairer.
There are several clock parts catalogues that can provide hard-to-find clock parts such as Hammond Synchronous clock parts and some older clock movements.
In general, when it comes to clocks, it's the movement that counts.
